Charlotte Clayson
Counsellor & Psychotherapist MSc (Psych), CTA, UKCP Reg

As a qualified UKCP-registered psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience, you can expect professional and compassionate support for a wide range of difficulties and life challenges.

Together, we can explore ways to overcome problems, make sense of your thoughts and feelings, and find a way forward that works positively for you.

My specialist areas include relationship issues (with partners, family, friends, and at work), anxiety, trauma, abuse, depression, persistent sadness, parenting concerns, bereavement, stress, low self-confidence, and alcohol or substance misuse.

Alongside one-to-one work, I also have extensive experience facilitating group therapy sessions. These groups offer a supportive environment to explore shared experiences, develop coping strategies, and improve overall wellbeing. Group work is particularly effective for issues such as low mood, anxiety, and social isolation, and can complement individual therapy.

With additional expertise in the field of addictions, I provide psychotherapy for individuals struggling with substance misuse. My approach involves helping you understand the underlying factors contributing to addiction, supporting you through recovery, and assisting in developing healthier coping mechanisms.

Benefits of Seeing a TA Psychotherapist

Charlotte offers therapy in person, online, and by telephone, ensuring support is flexible and accessible to suit different needs. Her approach is based on Transactional Analysis (TA) developed by Berne in the 1950s, a practical and insightful form of psychotherapy that helps people understand themselves, their relationships, and how they communicate.

TA explores the different parts of our personality—known as ego states—which influence how we think, feel, and behave. These include:

Parent Ego State: This comprises thoughts, feelings, and behaviours learned from parental figures and other significant adults in childhood. It can manifest as nurturing (supportive, caring) or critical (judgmental, controlling).

Adult Ego State: This is rooted in the present, dealing with direct responses to the "here and now." It's the rational, logical, and objective part of our personality, processing information without distortion from past experiences.

Child Ego State: This represents thoughts, feelings, and behaviours replayed from childhood. It can be free and natural (spontaneous, playful) or adapted (obedient, rebellious, or withdrawn in response to parental influences).

By examining how these ego states interact in everyday situations, TA helps bring awareness to unhelpful patterns and supports lasting change. It also looks at ‘life scripts’, which is the unconscious beliefs and behaviours formed in childhood that may still shape decisions and relationships in adult life.

Working with a TA psychotherapist can support personal growth, healthier relationships, and greater overall wellbeing. Charlotte takes a collaborative approach, helping clients uncover unconscious patterns, understand the roots of their behaviour, and develop practical tools to make conscious, lasting change.

  • TA helps individuals identify their dominant ego states in different situations, providing a deeper understanding of why they think, feel, and behave in certain ways. This insight can reveal the root causes of emotional issues and unhelpful patterns.

  • Enhancing your ability to clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, and feelings, while also truly understanding others’ perspectives.

  • A healthy relationship involves mutual trust, honest, open communication, and respect, where both partners feel safe, valued an supported, and are encouraged to maintain their individual identities while working together as a balanced, interdependent unit.

  • TA provides practical tools to identify and address conflicts constructively, replacing unproductive patterns with healthier communication strategies.

  • A core aim of TA is to help individuals strengthen their Adult ego state, enabling them to make conscious choices, take responsibility for their lives, and move away from restrictive childhood patterns (life scripts). This fosters a sense of personal agency and self-acceptance.

  • TA can be effective in treating a wide range of psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, and relationship difficulties, by addressing the underlying patterns and beliefs that contribute to these problems

  • Berne designed TA to be accessible and understandable, using clear language and models. This often makes it easier for clients to grasp the concepts and apply them to their daily lives.
